Pietermaritzburg's Nontuthuko Mashimane has run her first Comrades, while Durban's Antony Clapham - whose great granddad Vic actually founded the race - was going for his fourth medal. He finished with just a few minutes to spare!

They've been spotlighted in our Old Mutual series of videos which celebrate the essence of the Comrades: the everyday man and woman doing something extraordinary.

Rolling updates:

4:50pm - Antony is predicted to come in at 11:54. Please hold thumbs for him.

1:345pm: Nontuthuko is looking strong, with just 18kms to go. Antony is in the Camperdown area. Here they are earlier - with full support from the crowds.

12:30pm: Both runners have cleared the mid-way mark of Drummond. Antony is in the Inchanga area, while a powerful Nontuthuko is powering ahead and is through Camperdown.

11am - Nontuthuko is through Drummond, meaning she has made it before the 11.30am cut-off. Antony is about 30 minutes behind her.

A little earlier, Antony was chatty and in control of his race when we caught up with him. Watch below.

In the 1920's, one runner casually entered the day before and en route, stopped for a beer. Watch more below.

Here's the first footage from the start of this morning's epic ultra marathon.

Antony Clapham is off to a good start - he's about 10 minutes ahead of his time on the Comrades 2015 route.
