VIDEO: Fishing in the mangroves

I have never fished among the mangroves on the northern side of the Umgeni River mouth here in Durban.

I remember searching for shrimp in the mangroves and am now wondering if I had come close to meeting a crocodile in the process.

Of course, it is not that long ago that a crocodile was killed near Blue Lagoon.

That happened long after my last shrimp quest in the mangroves and I suspect ignorance may well have been bliss back in the day...

I have fished near the shore of the St Lucia Estuary. That was when the mouth was permanently open and when many different species of fish could be caught in both the estuary and Lake St Lucia itself.

I caught many fish, but was also bitten several times by little black insects. I also saw many crocodiles and hippos in the process.

Today we visit a part of the world where alligators live. Captain Blair Wiggins manages to avoid both alligators and bugs in what looks a truly awesome stretch of mangrove.
