VIDEO: Fishing for goliath grouper
Updated | By Andre Bloem
We join Captain Blair Wiggins for yet another fishing adventure.
Today the target species is a fish that reminds me so very much of the brindle bass we have here in KwaZulu-Natal.
Last time I went to uShaka Marine World they had two brindle bass swimming in the shark tank.
These fish are a protected species in KZN and so is the goliath grouper being hunted by Captain Wiggins in our footage today.
I remember tales of brindle bass weighing over 100kg caught on whole crab in Durban harbour back in the 1960s and 1970s.
I also remember a late fishing buddy telling me a story of the huge brindle bass he lost at the gaff on North Pier in Durban back in the 1960s.
A long battle ended with the brindle cutting his line right next to the pier.
Captain Wiggins gets a taste of just how strong goliath grouper are in this footage shot a couple of months ago.
