VIDEO: Catching shad on a fly
Updated | By Staff Writer
Anglers in the Western and Southern Cape here in South Africa tend to refer to shad as elf.
I suspect they will agree that whatever the label, this fish provides both excellent action and meat.
Shad are very common in KZN and can be caught on a variety of baits and lures.
They have sharp teeth and anglers are advised to use a steel trace and keep their fingers clear of the bite zone.
I have heard reports of shad reaching 18kg, but the biggest I have seen weighed around 5kg.
My exprience is that the bigger ones in KZN are often caught in early December.
Our footage below was shot in the USA and sees a bluefish hooked on fly tackle.
