Mullet are common around the world and large schools are often spotted cruising in Durban harbour.

I have clear memories of catching mullet in the bay.

The canals at Bayhead Road were favourite haunts in my teenage years.

The green algae (we called it slime) that floats down the canals was our preferred bait for targeting mullet.

Milkfish also liked the slime and sometimes grabbed your hook ahead of the less powerful target species.

I have not ventured to the canals in several years and suspect that fishing there could be illegal these days.

Our footage below shows anglers hunting mullet in France.

They use a far less slippery and slimy artificial bait in their quest for mullet action.
