VIDEO: Big Apple striper fishing

Captain Blair Wiggins pursues striped bass off New York City.

The biggest striped bass I know of weighed 57 kilograms.

I have seen these fish caught by using live eel as bait.

Striped bass are native to the Atlantic coastline of North America.

Population levels dipped to around 5-million by 1982.

However, conservation efforts resulted in an increase to around 56-million by 2007.

Conservation will also be a consideration at the Quattro King of the Sea contest at Pumula on 24 and 25 May.

Only a limited number of fish can be kept and none beyond the target species.

These are wahoo, yellowfin tuna, couta and Natal snoek.

I will be trying my luck off a boat at Pumula, while Alain Tardin will be fishing from a kayak.

I hope we will have some trophy fish to show you soon.

Let us for now stick with Captain Wiggings and a striper.
