VIDEO: Angler v Shark for Tuna
I have had several fish stolen by sharks over the years.
This has happened to me several times while fishing at Protea Banks off Shelley Beach.
I can recall at least three occasions where I have had hooked fish grabbed by sharks at this spot on the KZN south coast.
It happened during Quattro King of the Sea both this year and in 2014.
A couple of the sharks cleared the ocean surface in hitting my hooked tuna and it sure made for some spectacular fishing.
I also recall a similar incident off Umhlanga when a former colleague of mine had a kingfish chomped by a shark.
It is good reason to stay in the boat or on your jetski or kayak - there are some big sharks off KZN!
Today we see footage of a fisherman who somehow managed to save his tuna from being nabbed by a shark.
I suspect the trick was letting the tuna run when the shark closed in. This can also be useful when fishing at reefs known to harbour poaching sharks. That way you end up fighting the fish away from the main danger zone.
