United finished outside the top four last season and will not feature in the Uefa Champions League.
The Dutchman faces a daunting task to reclaim the glory days at the Theatre of Dreams, he needs to ensure his side finish in the top four and qualify for Europe's elite tournament next year.
Van Gaal's first assignment will come in the form of Swansea City at Old Trafford on Saturday afternoon, his team has not lost a match since he took charge.
