Two spinners to Dolphins rescue

Sunfoil Dolphins coach Lance Klusener hopes that having two spinners back in the team will bring an end to their losing streak.

Injuries forced Klusener to make three changes to his side this week, but one of them just might be a blessing in disguise for the Durban outfit – which is looking to put an end to a three-match losing streak.

Kyle Nipper makes his way into the team and his addition to the squad has given captain Morne van Wyk two spin options once again.

The Dolphins started off the season with Prenelan Subrayen and Keshav Maharaj as their spin options. But the former is still serving out a suspension for a suspect bowling action and the Dolphins have struggled without a second bowler to take the pace off the ball.

Klusener was optimistic that Nipper could fill the void and mix up the Dolphins’ bowling attack.

“Double spin can maybe work for us and that is where Nipper comes in. He gives us an extra batting option which we probably need,” the coach said.

“We need to find how to win with a different combination and it’s something we haven’t done. It is a way better fielding side, certainly with Nipper there. The fielding has let us down, let’s not hide from that. Maybe this is a combination that we can use which allows us to go back to double spin that we started the competition with - it gives us that option,” Klusener said.

As for Subrayen’s bowling rehabilitation, Klusener said the 22-year-old could be tested, in order to be cleared to play again, in the next two weeks.

“He’s been down this path before. We’ll probably look in the next week or two to get him tested. He can probably pass right now. He’s just been a little bit naughty that he has slipped back to what he knows best – but maybe it’s a lesson now that he can’t afford to do that.”

The Dolphins face the Knights at 14h00 on Saturday.
