Tries win matches says Gold

Gary Gold believes scoring tries is very important if a side hopes to win consistently in modern rugby.

Gold, the new Director of Rugby at the Cell C Sharks, argues that very few Vodacom SupeRugby games will be won 9-6.

Gold, currently coaching in Japan, believes attack is an area that will need considerable focus at the Sharks next season.

"We want to work really hard on our attack and our attacking structures. Fans watch rugby to see tries and the players themselves want to score tries. It is obviously important to get the balance right and not to play a romantic brand of rugby that ends in defeat. We ultimately do have to win and I believe scoring tries is very important in securing victories," Gold said in Durban today.

He added that he believes the Sharks have players who want to and can score tries.

"They want the ball in hand and I think it is our job as the coaching staff to develop the skills the players need to play the attacking brand of rugby they want to play," Gold added.

Gold plans to honour his commitment to his Japanese club and this could keep him in Japan until the end of January next year.
