Top 5 UEFA Champions League Finals

These UEFA Champions League finals were decided under bizarre circumstances, with dramatic twists involved.

5. Chelsea 1 -1  Bayern Munich (Chelsea won 4-3 on penalties)

One of the most gripping finals in Champions League history with suspense involved. When Bayern scored in the 83rd minute, everyone thought it was over but Didier Drogba equalised with a thunderous header two minutes from time to take the match to extra-time.

Another twist happened in extra-time. The German outfit were awarded a penalty but Chelsea's Petr Cech saved Arjen Robben's spot-kick to give his team a chance to win the match on penalties.  Chelsea ended up winning the match 4-3 on penalties.

4. Real Madrid 4-1 Atletico Madrid

Atletico took a 36th minute lead through Diego Godin and they sought to defend it for the restof the game. Their defence was so resolute and almost succeeded, but Sergio Ramos popped up in the opposition box in referee's optional time to power Luka Modric's corner into the net.

After that goal Atletico capitulated and conceded three goals in extra-time.

3. Manchester United 1- 1 Chelsea (Manchester United won 6-5 on penalties)

This is the most open final I've ever seen in my life. Both teams had a go at each other. Attacking football was the order of the day. Cristiano Ronaldo's header was cancelled out by Frank Lampard's strike.

Towards the end of extra-time tempers flared and Didier Droba was shown a straight red for slapping Manchester United captain, Nemanja Vidic.

In an unlikely event, Cristiano Ronaldo missed United's third penalty which gave Chelsea the opportunity to win the game if they scored their remaining three spot-kicks. John Terry was tasked with converting the last one but he slipped and saw his shot hitting the upright and going wide.

United were off the hook and the match went to sudden death. Chelsea's seventh penalty was taken by Nicholas Anelka who hit it to the keeper's right in contrast with all the other Chelsea players. Edwin van der Sar saved the penalty and the Red Devils claimed the trophy.

2. Liverpool 3-3 AC Milan (Liverpool won 3-2 on penalties)

Most Liverpool fans probably went to bed at half-time thinking it was over, but a dramatic turn of events saw their team emerge the victors. AC Milan were leading 3-0 at half-time, but the Scousers scored three goals within six minutes in the second half to force an extra-time that laughs in the face of logic.

In a breathtaking shootout in which most superstars failed to score, Liverpool managed to edge Milan 3-2.

1. Manchester United 2-1 Bayern Munich

The most dramatic ending to any cup game I've ever seen in my life. Bayern took the lead as early as the eighth minute, courtesy of a Mario Basler free-kick.

When everyone thought it was over, two United substitutes - Teddy Sheringham and Ole Gunnar Solskjaer - scored two stoppage time goals within a space of two minutes to hand their team the trophy.

The game restarted, but many Bayern players were overwhelmed with despair, virtually unable to continue and needed the assistance of referee Pierluigi Collina to drag themselves off the ground.

The game's ending was so unexpected that UEFA President Lennart Johansson had left his seat in the stands before Sheringham's equaliser to make his way down to the pitch to present the European Cup trophy, already decorated with Bayern ribbons. When emerging from the tunnel at the final whistle, he was stunned. He said "I can't believe it. The winners are crying and the losers are dancing."
