Stick with Coetzee - Krige

Former Springbok captain, Corne Krige, feels that for now it is best to stick with Allister Coetzee as Springbok head coach.

"It is easy to say fire him, but who will replace him? It is a job some coaches will not want to take. There is huge political involvement. I think it is safer sticking with Allister and giving him more time to prove himself," Krige said.

It has been suggested that SA Rugby consider central contracting for players in a bid to manage workloads and prevent players from moving abroad. Krige feels it is unlikely that there is enough money in South Africa to prevent players from leaving our shores.

"I don't think there is enough money. Central contracting will definitely help to manage the players and to ensure that structures are what they should be to encourage great Springbok performances. However, getting this done could prove very difficult," said Krige.

Critics of the current state of rugby in South Africa also tend to argue that we have too many SupeRugby franchises. Krige agrees with this view.

"I think we might have one too many. You know the Kings are never going to achieve much in SupeRugby. Having said that it is worth noting that that area is one of the breeding grounds for players of colour. We really need to develop players of colour from a young age and not try to force the issue at the top level. We need start at the bottom and have a good system in place to produce players of colour," Krige added.

The Springbok sevens team currently tops the Sevens Series standings.

However, they have now lost a key player in Seabelo Senatla and Krige is looking forward to seeing him in SupeRugby. He also warns that SupeRugby will be a very different challenge for Senatla.

"People tend to underestimate just how different it is playing 15-man rugby compared to the sevens game. They are two totally different games. In one you need to be extremely physical and in the other you must be fit, quick and have very good skills. I suspect Senatla will find less space in SupeRugby," Krige concluded.
