Anglers in the Southern Drakensberg have enjoyed good fly fishing over the past week.

Carp - With the popularity of fake baits on the rise and the effects of it being seen country wide, Korda Pop-up Maize, Corn and Dumbells have exploded into the kits of anglers around the country. Many anglers seem to prefer fake baits in the pink colour, which has been fished in most dams with huge success. Over the past weekend Shongweni produced three good fish all close to 10kg, but other than that the dam has been relatively quiet. Inanda has produced more fish of decent size over the last week, with two fish being weighed in at over 13kg. Both were caught on FX flavored tiger nuts. Albert Falls is also doing well with anglers trying out Super Cast Bleeding floaties with a lot of success.

Fly Fishing - All the dams in the Kamberg, Southern Drakensburg and Swartberg area are fishing extremely well. Some of the dams being fished by parties of three anglers have cleaned up with hauls of over 60 fish in a 3-hour session. If one opts for a more finessed presentation, and does not wish to use the preferred bulky flies such as Wooly Buggers and Papa Roach's, then flies such as Red Eye Damsels and Ghre Flash Back Nymphs should be used. Thanks to Dale for the feedback on the Matatiele Mountain Lake competition held last weekend. Friday evening saw fly fishermen from all over the country converge on the Matatiele Mountain Lake for the annual fly fishing competition. With a 6am start on Saturday morning most anglers from far decided to spend the evening up at the lake so they could get an early start. Saturday morning 6am the siren sounded, which saw most anglers scramble down to the water to get started whilst others put their weary heavy heads out of the tent and where pleasantly greeted by one of the most perfect sunrises one can only experience high up in the mountains. Within an hour, local angler William Wiggle came running up from the water with a fish to be weighed. The beautiful Rainbow hen weighed 2.74 kg and proved to be the winning fish.
