Ski Boat Festival ends in tie

Marlin have been landed over the last week and weekend throughout the entire Zululand region, out in the deep and some fish in surprisingly shallow water.

North - Good reports of Natal Snoek on backline and slightly deeper water off Maphelane, being landed on strip baits with pink dusters and also small Kingfisher Rattlers and chrome spoons. Most Snoek have been between 2kgs and 6kgs with reports of larger fish being landed on fillet strip baits.

Couta have been on the bite throughout the week, many of which have been landed from St Lucia and Cape Vidal on live baits. Bonito seems to be the best bait at the moment, preferably live.

Seas are predicted to settle and most days of the week and weekend should be fishable with the exception of Thursday afternoon which sees another moderate Westerly.

Central - As most of you will know, Durban Ski Boat Club hosted the annual Durban Skiboat Festival over the weekend, which is one of the largest and most prestigious angling events in the country. Prizes are awarded for heaviest Tuna, Dorado, Wahoo and Snoek, but the main prize being a Seacat 520 rigged out and sporting two Yamaha 60hp 2stroke motors being awarded to the angler weighing in the biggest King Mackerel of the competition.

Saturday’s weather and sea conditions saw many a boat on the water, trying their luck. The heaviest Couta of the day was taken by Dwayne Bishop, a fish tipping scales at 23.8kgs. Sunday’s sea conditions left much to be desired, with a howling Westerly gusting at 33knots only allowing for 60 odd boats to launch. Most anglers were back early and not many fish were caught, however, one of the fish caught was to put twist to things.

Jeff Harman surprised everybody by weighing in yet another Couta of 23.8kgs and was tie for first place with Dwayne. No Couta bigger than the two were landed and both anglers shared first and second prize. Other memorable catches include a nice Yellowfin Tuna of 26kgs caught by Justin Painter and first place in the juniors was awarded for a nice Yellowfin of 23kgs.
