Silver for Le Clos with a promise of more.

Chad Le Clos earned South Africa the second medal and second silver of the Games  in the 200m Freestyle.

The Durban swimmer went out fast not only with the fastest reaction time, but also leading the best in the world through half way in 50.36, with Americas 0.85 seconds adrift, and China’s Sun Yang languishing back in sixth over 1.2 seconds off the pace.

Although losing some momentum in the third length, Le Clos still owned the lead and looked capable of gold, but Yang, who commenced in sixth was winding up the pace with each turn.

Clocking the fastest lap of the race, (26.37), in the third lap, Yang moved through to take the lead, a 0.55 second advantage, and snatch the gold medal away from the South African.

“I not only swim for my coach, my friends and my country but also for family,” said Le Clos. “its been an incredibly hard few months, but when I push down that last 50m its all these things that keep me going harder."

No sooner had Le Clos been presented with his silver, than he was back in the water for his more favored event, the 200m butterfly, where he would finish 3rd against the returning and vastly experienced Michael Phelps.

After turning in second Le clos dropped back to 7th  at the half way mark, before  stepping up the intensity, which brought him back into contention.

Hungary’s  Tames Kendersi capitalized on the opportunity moving into second and then out sprinting the vastly experienced Michael Phelps to record 1:53.96.   Le clos was third and qualified for Tuesday's final with a 1:55.19.

“I have huge respect for all seven of the other guys, and have not singled anyone out for tomorrows final,” said the defending Olympic Champion. “all I can say is that I am a fighter and will chase them down if that needs to be and keep chasing. I believe I am in the shape of my life, but I know its going to be really tough out there."

The 200m Butterfly final takes place Wednesday morning at 3:22am SA Time.
