Moshoeu died in hospital yesterday afternoon at the age of 49, after battling cancer.
Moshoeu, who also played for AmaZulu and Kaizer Chiefs, represented South Africa in 73 internationals and scored eight goals for Bafana Bafana.
He was part of the squad that won the African Cup of Nations in 1996.
Mkhalele says Moshoeu contributed greatly to South African football.
"Shoes played a huge role in my life. He serves as an inspiration for me, especially when we were in Turkey. I didn't know anything, I didn't even know the language but he was there to help me adapt to those conditions," he said.
The #RIPShoes is trending on Twitter in Durban.
