Sharks’ Adriaanse on Boks bench
Updated | By Gareth Jenkinson
Cell C Sharks tighthead prop Lourens Adriaanse has been named on the Springbok bench for their second clash of the Rugby Championship against Argentina.
Vincent Koch starts at tighthead prop in place of Julian Redelinghuys, who was injured in the first Test in Nelspruit last weekend. That means Adriaanse could earn his second Bok cap if he comes off the reserves bench this weekend.
The lone change to the front row accounts for the only change from the Springbok starting XV that beat Argentina 30-23 last weekend and the continuity in the starting lineup will be crucial for a tough clash in Salta.
The only other change to the side sees Morne Steyn replace Juan de Jongh on the bench. That is a tactical selection, given that Steyn will provide another kicking option for the Springboks.
Coach Allister Coetzee believes the continuity in selection and the added kicking option will be massive factors in this weekend’s Test.
“Vincent did very well when he came on as a replacement for Julian in
Nelspruit, and he is rewarded with a starting berth, while we believe it would
be good to give Lourens an opportunity on the bench at this stage,” said
Coetzee.
“We expect them to try and put us under pressure with their tactical kicking. Morné is an experienced player with good kicking attributes, and he will provide an additional kicking cover for us.
“We will continue to build on our cohesion as a team. This is the first away Test for this side and we expect another huge battle against the Pumas.”
The Boks face Argentina at 21h40 on Saturday night.
