"I'm very much linked to FIFA and its interestsThose interests are very dear to me which is why I've taken this decision.

"I would like to thank everyone who supported me. What counts most to me is the institution of FIFA and its people around the world."

Speaking through a translator in Zurich, Blatter who has been head of the world football governing body for 17-years says a special congress will be called to elect a successor.

The 79-year-old would remain in office until that election is held presumably between December this year and March 2016.

While Blatter has not yet been identified publicly as a target of the investigation a spokesperson for the FBI says they are focusing on Blatter in their corruption probe.
