The 2009 world 800m gold medalist has been hitting similar form this year and twice recorded 1:56.64 seconds for her favoured 800m, but has shown with her 400m time that she has the potential of destroying the SA record over 1500m which still belongs to Zola Pieterse.

Semenya set the world's leading times at both Rabat and last night's Rome Diamond League meeting.

A large team of 96 athletes has been announced for the African Championships which will effectively be the last real competition for most athletes to stake their claim for a seat on the plane to the Rio Olympics from 5 to 21 August.

Others to excel with wins in Rome were Sunette Viljoen in the javelin, who headed a top field that battled in the conditions to get beyond 62 metres, and Wayde van Neikerk who even eased off over the final 20 metres when winning his 400m race.

A noticeable omission from the team is Anaso Jobodwana who has been injured, but on his way back and this morning onthe  ECR Breakfast Show said that he may be back and fit enough for the African Championships.

This will be a very important event for the relay guys who need to get the necessary qualifying marks to be able to compete at the Rio Olympics.
