Caster and Mokoena advance in Beijing

Caster Semenya ran a tactically perfect race, and showed her ability to put in a last minute charge is back, in running through to secure a spot in the semi-final of the 800m when she recorded a season's best of 1:59.59 for third behind Marina Arzamazova (1:58.69) and Lindsay Sharp.

Semenya's speed over the final 100m would probably have been the fastest of the night.

Semenya seemed to be trying to keep a low profile in the heat and has made a substantial improvement over the past six weeks having achieved a last minute qualification in Austria in 2:00.72.

Over the past three years Semenya has shown little of the form that earned her a silver in the Olympics or the 1:55.45 that put her in the limelight as the 2009 gold medalist.

I doubt we have seen the best of Semenya this year, who had the third fastest qualifier of the six heats, and a podium place is certainly not out of the question - watch this space - and I expect her to push the turbo jet in the final at the end of the championships!

Khotso Mokoena, who just failed to make the long jump final on the count-back system, had a tough time making his way into the final of the triple jump.

The Commonwealth Games champion leapt to 16.78 with both his first and third trials and recorded a no jump with the middle attempt.

Mokoena ended up in 10th position and must now focus on tidying his take off where there seems to be some distance to be gained from getting closer on the board.
