SA hunting Polocrosse WC final spot

The tournament hosts are defending champions, but face a tough task tomorrow when they take on Australia in the first semi-final of the competition.
South Africa lost to Zambia in their opening match last weekend, before securing wins over New Zealand and the USA – which saw them book a date with the team from Down Under.
South Africa’s captain Gavin Cocker spoke to East Coast Radio today ahead of tomorrow’s big match. The skipper said his teammates had gleaned a lot from their opening loss to their African neighbours.
“Zambia actually gave us a wakeup call. They gave us a lot of motivation and our second two games were great, I think we played really well and achieved what we needed to,” Cocker said.
“There were a couple of things which turned our fortunes around. Firstly I think that we all found horses which suited us. Secondly, we actually started playing our style of play - we played how we wanted to.”
Looking ahead to their semi-final tie, Cocker said his side know what to expect from Australia.
“Well I think Australia play like they have for quite a number of years so we understand their game. We just need to execute what we’ve practiced and play like we did in the first weekend – that should leave us in good stead. We’re actually concentrating on what we need to do rather than what they are doing,” he said.
Tomorrow’s action gets underway at 08h30 when USA take on Zimbabwe. New Zealand face Ireland at 10h30 before South Africa saddle up against Australia at 12h30. The final game of the day sees Zambia take on the UK at 14h30.
Shongweni usually attracts equine enthusiasts and Cocker was pleased with the support the Polocrosse World Cup had received. He encouraged more people to come out for the final’s weekend.
“Obviously we hope more people will come out but we had a great turnout on the first weekend and were overwhelmed by the support we got. I think everyone had a fantastic time and by the sound of things, they are coming back this weekend. Anyone wanting to must come and give us some support – we really welcome it.”
