Rooney has replaced Steven Gerrard at the helm.

Coach Roy Hodgson says the decision was obvious.

The Manchester United skipper will begin his tenure next month, he has scored 40 goals in 95 matches for the English.

His first assignment will come in the form of Norway on September 3.

England will use that match to build for their Euro 2016 qualifier with Switzerland on September 8.
