Richards Bay wahoo and sailfish

Richards Bay wahoo and sailfish

We have been told of good wahoo and sailfish action for anglers off Richards Bay over the past week.

All in all a quiet week for ski-boat anglers along the KZN coast thanks to the large surf conditions. The sea seemed to be fishable on the outside in the deeper water, so boats launching from protected sites were able to get out relatively easily. The surf launching boats had a bit of a tough time with surf that stood up to 4m in certain areas which combined with a short wave period, sent many seasoned surf launchers home. The boats up north who managed to launch saw some good wahoo and dorado with a few marlin and sailfish in the mix too. Some very nice amberjack were also seen in the shallower waters and were caught on a variety of lures. Richards Bay saw some lovely sailfish and wahoo, which have made good size and it was good to see that most of the sailfish were released. Couta seem to be more active in the Richards Bay area and have moved down to Zinkwazi and even lower. Robbie Waites Jr managed to secure himself a lovely couta of 29kg which puts him way up there with the top dogs this year so far. Robbie managed to land this beauty off his paddle-ski which makes it even more impressive. Natal snoek are now really feeding well and have made a huge appearance along the coast, mainly from the Richards Bay areas and down to the Bluff, concentrated mainly in the Umdloti area where many boaters are getting snoek of up to 8kg.

For the anglers not willing to get up early to meet the sunrise, it is good to know that the snoek seem to be feeding all day and come on the bite particularly well in the afternoons.  Small spoons have been getting a lot of attention. However, the fish seem to be more committed to a red-eye fillet trawled slowly behind the boat. Paddle-skis have been doing well with Clark spoon or even regular spoons being pulled at a faster pace close inshore.  The Kingfisher Anchovy spoon will be an excellent choice for casting the distance and with its foil finish should be sure to grab the attention of the fish in a hurry.  The new range of Daiwa Sealine rods has been released, which follow in the footsteps of the legendary SL range of reels, exceptional quality and reliability. These rods are available in a variety of options to suit each individuals need, and coming in at a fair price, will be sure to impress even the fussiest of anglers. Another introduction that has been long awaited is the brand new Exceler Spinning rods which boast a quality Fuji Winch, Minima Titanium wire guides and one heck of a backbone to get you out  many a tough situation. For live baiting, popping, jigging or just about anything required, the Exceler is as good as it gets.

For those doing bottom fishing, excellent catches have been reported in the Bluff and Toti areas, moving all the way down to the Transkei where the seas have been a bit rough lately. The die-hards have launched and reaped the benefits. Snoek along the coast towards Umkomaas have been on the loose and many fish up to 5kg have been reported.
