Richards Bay spinner shark action

Richards Bay spinner shark action

We have heard of good spinner shark action for anglers in Richards Bay this past week.

Kosi Bay has been productive with plenty more species seen throughout the area. Honeycombs, sandsharks, greater barracuda and snapper salmon were seen frequently for the majority of last week, with most fish being of decent size too. Chokka and mackerel baits seemed to have worked better than most baits. Sand mackerel head is a deadly bait for many flatfish and a fresh cutlet cannot be left alone for long, sometimes outperforming many other baits.

Cape Vidal has seen honeycombs, sandies, blackfin sharks and diamonds have been feeding well on the north side, mainly on bigger baits. The south side produced lots of smaller edible fish. Mainly cave bass, kingfish and small shad. A few large speckled snapper were also caught slightly further south.

Lots of brown skates and small spinner sharks have been landed in Richards Bay over the last week, mainly on mackerel heads presented with cutlets bound to the sides. Most of the browns were caught on prawn and chokka baits.

Ballito has seen duckbill rays landed on most points on most small chokka slide baits. Spinning enthusiasts were kept busy with a few Natal snoek and kingfish on small spoons such as Kingfisher Anchovy and Chase spoons.

Westbrook and Umdloti saw a few spadefish off the beach. These fish are normally speared rather than caught on bait. Other species which have been landed include big grey sharks, many of which have been lost due to light tackle being used with intentions of landing stumpies and pompano. Bonefish have also been landed.
