Prodigal son action off Toti

Prodigal son action off Toti

We have been told of good prodigal son fishing off the KwaZulu-Natal south coast.

There is an increasing presence of pairs of humpback whales travelling north along our coastline this time of year. These whales are seen as they migrate along our coastal waters between May and November en-route to their feeding and breeding grounds off Mozambique. Pregnant females will give birth in warm waters and then nurture their calves for a few months before leaving the area.

Good catches of sailfish up north in the Sodwana and Maphelane areas. Most fish have been caught on Konas in the deep. There have also been a few reports of anglers hooking into fish in the shallows on baits. Conditions have not been that great, but for the anglers that have spent time on the water, fish have been caught accordingly.

Tuna on the north coast have been eating live baits as well as Rattlers. Zinkwazi has started to produce catches of garrick in the back-line. These fish have been caught on shad and mullet. Remember to keep casting plugs and poppers such as the Kingfisher Rattler Popper 140 into the surf zone to draw the fish out towards your baits. This can increase your strike rate massively.

Durban has had its ups and downs, but anglers seem to have come out on the top once again with many catches of tuna, snoek and some very good bottoms as well. Anglers on back-line have reported sightings of garrick as well.

Good reports of prodigal son in 30-40m of water off Toti and Hibberdene, but remember, fluorocarbon is a must for these fussy eaters. Anglers fishing into the evenings and throughout the night have been rewarded with good catches of geelbek and daga on the wrecks. There have been a number of sharks around, so be sure to upgrade to at least 100lb braid to apply maximum pressure to these fish.
Good catches of wahoo on Aliwal Shoal, which have been caught mainly on live bonito trawled with heavy wire couta traces. Many anglers will prefer the use of American Fishing Bleeding Wire steel trace or even down rigger cable.
