Plenty grunter in Durban harbour
Updated | By Nondumiso Zakwe
An excellent week of fishing has gone by and it has not slowed down at all going into the new week.
Over the last week reports have been received daily from proud anglers happy to show off their catches of grunter in Durban harbour.
One boat managed to land three grunter between 1.5kg and 2kg and another two of 3.5kg and 4kg.
Another boat managed two fish over 4kg on drift sardine fillet on the banks at night.
One can only imagine what is to come in the next few days with the amount of sardines being netted off Durban.
Many of the more experienced anglers will stick around the harbour mouth and make use of sardine baits and even whole sardine in hope of catching a few geelbek.
Grunter will feed readily on sardine fillet, as well as a variety of other species such as kob, rockcod, stumpies, rock salmon and perch.
These species can all be caught in the same areas in the harbour, particularly in times like this when they can be pin-pointed close to bait.
On 1 August The Kingfisher started their annual Biggest Shad Competition. This year it will be run over a two-month period, August and September, with three prizes each month. The heaviest shad for each month will receive a Daiwa SL 50SHK Reel, valued at R1625, the second heaviest shad will receive a 13’6” Kingfisher Coastline Medium, three-piece, 4-6oz Graphite Rod, valued at R1145 and third heaviest shad will receive a Daiwa AG 6000 Reel valued at R598. Please note that all shad (fresh) must be weighed at either, The Kingfisher, 53 Hunter Street or Tackle Centre, Old Fort Road or The Fishing Tackle Shop, Warner Beach during trading hours.
Please remember there is a bag limit of four and the minimum size is 30cm and that the season closes 30 September and re-opens 1 December 2015.
