Philander could face Dolphins

Cape Cobras coach, Paul Adams, is striving for better consistency and decision making from his team when they take on the Sunfoil Dolphins in a Sunfoil Series clash starting at PPC Newlands in Cape Town on Thursday.

The hosts are coming off a three-wicket loss to the VKB Knights in their last game, one of four defeats in eight matches so far in what has been a largely disappointing campaign.

The clash against the KwaZulu-Natal side has little riding on the outcome – both teams are out of the title race – with just two rounds remaining in the season.

“I think it’s important for us to strive for improvement, particularly in the areas where we have been inconsistent,” Adams said. “We’re really determined to end of on a good note in these last couple of weeks. Our inconsistency and decision making has let us down this season, so we want to make sure we get better at those things. We have to make sure we’re in gear so we can play according to the way we want to.”

With an eye already on building towards next season, rookie opener Cebo Tshiki, who plays for Boland, has been named in the squad.

Good news for Proteas fans is that Vernon Philander is also back in the mix, while Rory Kleinveldt also returns. Captain Omphile Ramela is on study leave, though, with Justin Ontong set to deputise.

The Dolphins too are looking towards the future and have drafted franchise debutant Senuran Muthusamy, Sibonelo Makhanya and Brandon Scullard into their squad. Craig Alexander and Calvin Savage are also back after injuries, but Morne van Wyk, Khaya Zondo and Daryn Dupavillon are all on the casualty list.

The visitors managed to escape with a draw from their last outing against the bizhub Highveld Lions – a rain-affected contest in Pietermaritzburg.

“To an extent we were a little disappointing against the Lions, mainly because our bowlers didn’t hit the ground running and we let the Lions get away from us in that first session,” interim coach, Yashin Ebrahim, said. “We had two good games before that though and we’ve got a young squad now so hopefully we can pull it all together again in Cape Town and play well.”
