Petersen has been involved in several tours and series with the Proteas but is yet to make his test debut for the national side.

The 27-year-old is pipped to fill the void left following the retirement of Faf du Plessis from test cricket but hasn’t felt impatient when involved in a Proteas camp.

“It’s been a while [involved with the Proteas] but it doesn’t feel like it,” Petersen said.

“It’s always nice coming into this environment because it’s the next level of professionalism.

“For me it hasn’t required patience because it’s a privilege to be here and when I get the chance in whatever shape or form, I will be forever grateful.”

A career that has spanned nine years so far has led to Petersen being on the verge of a test cap is the culmination of a lot of hard work.

“To get a go in this side means a lot because I know where I have come from and I know the journey has been tough and long.

“This is what we dream of as kids and this is why we play the game,” he added.

Petersen moved to Durban at the beginning of last season and was crucial in the side winning the 4-Day Domestic Series and sharing the Momentum One Day Cup.

Playing in Durban and for the Dolphins has been a big part of his success recently.

“Durban has been good to me; the Dolphins have been good to me and my game.

“I have learnt a lot since being there and it’s expanded my game and playing in Durban in testing conditions has made me a better cricketer.

“Kingsmead has prepared me for any slow or turning wicket and if that’s what the conditions are going to be like in the West Indies then it won’t be anything new to me.”
