KwaZulu-Natal Cycling has been awarded the rights to host the 2014 SA National Track and Para-Cycling Championships.

The event will take place at the Cyril Geoghegan Cycle Stadium in Durban from 29 April to 3 May 2014.

The province has of late, found favour with Cycling South Africa (CSA), to hold many of their national, and international events in both Durban and Pietermaritzburg, the most recent being the recent national road championships in Durban.

Track cycling is regarded as one of the specialist disciplines of the sport, with all age categories catered for. The Masters categories boast world class riders over the age of 70. The national track championships were last seen in Durban in 2006 and organisers are hard at work making this event bigger and better than ever before. The 333m and 42-degree banked velodrome has recently been high-pressure cleaned and more work is being undertaken by the Ethekweni Municipality to get the track in a standard acceptable to hold a national event.

The Durban-based professional Team Abantu riders are expected to put in every effort for their rider, Nolan Hoffman, who will compete in next week’s UCI World Track Championships in Cali in Colombia. Hoffman, known more as an endurance track rider than a pure sprinter, has dominated track cycling over the past few years, along with his numerous wins on the road during the 2013 season. He will, however, not have it all his way, with a strong presence from the likes of Team Intellibus.

Entries are now open and available on the Facebook site or through Cycling South Africa’s website and the provisional programme has already been made public.

As with the recent National Road Cycling Championships, the Para-Cycling categories will be included in the Track Cycling Championship event.
