Marlin action off Sodwana

Anglers have enjoyed good marlin fishing off Sodwana over the past week.

North - Fishing at Sodwana and Cape Vidal has been very productive recently. Marlin, particularly at Sodwana, have been quite prolific. One angler managed to land two black marlin in the 180kg range and many more have been successfully released. Couta, dorado, tuna and the odd big wahoo made up the rest of the catches. Fishing-ski anglers at Cape Vidal have also been very active with good catches of small shoal couta and yellowfin tuna. Fishing-ski anglers targeting big Natal snoek at first light have had some excellent results. The average size here is in the 6kg range and can provide some exiting fishing.

Central - Fishing in the Durban area has picked up to nearly acceptable levels for this time of the year. The long awaited elusive dorado have finally made an appearance off Durban. Some boats have reported catching double figures and the average size is around the 8kg mark. When the current changes back to the NE these fish will surely come in to the closer reefs. Yellowfin tuna are still being caught from Durban right up to the Ballito area. There are some sketchy reports of the odd big couta being caught in the Westbrook area.

South - This is where most of the action has been for the past few weeks with Aliwal Shoal taking centre stage for producing some excellent catches. Yellowfin tuna are still plentiful, but the unseasonal Cape yellowtail are still being caught in good numbers. Quite a few sailfish are being reported and local angler Johan Coetzer managed to land and successfully release a good size black marlin. With cleaner water and higher temperatures this venue is soon going to start producing couta and dorado, some of which have already been accounted for. Sharks have been a persistent and continuing problem here when bigger fish are being hooked.
