Loads of shad at Cape Vidal

Anglers at Cape Vidal on the KZN north coast were kept very busy by shad over the past week.

Kosi Bay - This area has had a bit of a quiet spell with the in-edibles over the last week, allowing anglers to spend their time concentrating on edible species such as stumpies and wave garrick. These fish were targeted on small chokka baits on light tackle. Most anglers fishing in the lakes managed a few decent kingfish on fly and dropshot as well. As the water starts to heat up we will start to notice a big difference in the feeding patterns and the number of fish being landed, so keep a few days of your summer open for a trip up to Kosi Bay.

Cape Vidal - Reports suggest massive numbers of shad in the area, which have been making good size and are also proving to be working very well as bait for larger flatfish such as diamond skates, honeycombs and also a few blackfin sharks. Live shad slid out has also produced a number of garrick.

Richards Bay - There have been good catches of kob and garrick around Richards Bay, as well as a number of flatfish of all sorts. The bay has handed over many a grunter to anglers fishing from boats and from the side, most of which have been much larger than previous weeks. Going with what we have seen thus far, our summer should be hugely productive.

Zinkwazi/Blythedale - Grey sharks have been targeted in the evenings by anglers using spinning outfits and medium sized throw baits. Quite a few fish have been caught, mostly coming out in twos and threes. Blue rays and better size shad have been caught in the mornings along this stretch.

Ballito - Anglers in this area have been catching smaller shad and the odd decent size fish, and with plenty of peckers around, most baits do not last too long.

Virginia -There have been extremely good catches of shad on Japanese mackerel in the mornings and early evenings. This would be a spot to keep an eye on for a personal best shad in the weeks to come.

Blue Lagoon - Still good catches of shad on spoon in the mornings, and with the recent catches of garrick off the bricks, the amount of anglers fishing has doubled in the last week. The presence of these shad has created easy pickings for the garrick. There have been a few kob off the North Bank in the mornings and evenings. They are being caught on McArthy Paddletails and also baits.

Durban - Millions of peckers attack many of the baits being thrown in hope of hooking into blue rays and grey sharks off Durban. The main culprits being eeltail barbel and maasbanker. The few blue rays that have been landed have been larger specimens, weighing between 12kg and 15kg. Smaller grunter and stumpnose have been landed closer to Blue Waters Pier, most of which have been caught on sardine baits.
