Leicester City - Champs to Chumps

Leicester City defied 5000-1 odds to win the English Premier League title last season.

This after a season in which they were involved in a relegation battle.

Now the Foxes are again embroiled in a fight for Premiership survival.

This is a dramatic rollercoaster ride and Leicester look in real danger of becoming the first champions in the Premiership era to be relegated the season after winning the title.

So what has changed at the club?

The loss of N'Golo Kante is proving a big blow.

Kante is now playing a key role for Chelsea in their title charge.

He was a giant in the Leicester midfield last season with his ability to gobble up loose balls and distribute quickly to the likes of Jamie Vardy and Riyad Mahrez.

It was the speed of their counter-attack that helped Leicester surprise more fancied opponents last season.

Leicester were also solid at the back.

This season their defence is making mistakes - Both as a collective and as individuals. This despite Leicester still having the defensive line-up with which they won the title.

I suspect sides have also figured out what worked for Leicester last season and have modified the way they play against the Foxes.

Leicester, in turn, have struggled to adapt their gameplan to the demands of a title defence.

They surprised last season and now the rabbit is out of the hat.

Claudio Ranieri needs to find a new solution and fast.

The likes of Vardy and Mahrez have been figured out by opposition defences and suddenly look very ordinary.

I wonder if there was perhaps complacency at Leicester when the season started - A belief that what worked last season would work again this time around?

Kante was the only major departure and Ranieri has made signings with this in mind.

Some may also argue that Leicester won the title with a limited squad that simply clicked into a perfect storm last season.

It may also be that some of the bigger clubs are stronger this season than they were when Leicester won the title.

However, it is not as if Leicester are in the middle of the table.

They are 17th and just two points clear of bottom club Sunderland.
