KZN scholars excel at SA Champs
Updated | By Staff Writer
The future of golf in this country looks enormously promising judging by the calibre of play at last week’s SA Schools Golf Tournament held in Durban.
In the team event KZN A beat defending champions Gauteng Noord by 87 shots after four rounds. Kearsney College’s James Kennedy (KZN A), who won the KZN Schools championships at Durban Country Club with a final round 65, lead from the 1st round, taking a slim lead of 1 stroke into the final round, with Anu Gounden (KZN A) from Phoenix hot on his heels.
Greg McKay (KZN A), also from Kearsney, had an incredible last round going 4 under par in the final six holes, which included an eagle on the 18th from off the green to shoot 67 and beat team mate James Kennedy by one shot. Greg’s final score was three over par for the four rounds of golf.
In the team event KZN A team played superb golf in their own back yard to beat Gauteng Noord, who have won the competition for the past seven years. The boys played 36 holes at Beachwood on Thursday and 36 holes at Durban Country Club on Friday.
KZN B won a very credible 3rd place ahead of the other eight teams.
