One of the worst Typhoons in many decades battered much of central Honshu on Saturday night leaving widespread flooding. Local media outlets in Japan have reported at least nine deaths due to the storm while millions of Japanese people are still under an evacuation warning.

Approximately 270 000 households are said to be without power and a number of dams were forced to release water to alleviate pressure from the massive torrential rains in the region. TV news outlets are broadcasting images of severe flooding in several areas.

As emergency services begin efforts to help those in the worst-hit areas, World Rugby began assessing which of the final pool games scheduled for Sunday would continue as planned.

Early on Sunday, Namibia and Canada’s clash which was due to be played in Kamaishi was called off completely due to the high rainfall in the Iwate Prefecture. There were concerns of landslides in the areas around the stadium and surrounds and fears for fans safety prompted the match to be cancelled.

Attention quickly turned to Yokohama where Japan and Scotland were due to lock horns on Sunday evening. The fixture is a crucial one as the outcome will decide which of the two teams progress to the quarterfinals of the Rugby World Cup.

World Rugby confirmed on Sunday morning that the match would go ahead as planned on Sunday night.

The USA will take on Tonga in Higashiosaka City on Sunday afternoon and Wales will face Uruguay in Kumamoto City at 17h15 Japanese time.

Japan and Scotland’s match will kick-off at 19h45 local time at the International Stadium Yokohama - bringing down the curtain on the pool stages of the Rugby World Cup.

If Japan win the match, they will top Pool A and face the Springboks next Sunday in the quarterfinals.
