Jantjies welcomes stiffer competition

Springbok and Lions flyhalf, Elton Jantjies, has welcomed the prospect of stiffer competition this season to wear the Springbok number 10 jersey.

Jantjies and Patrick Lambie of the Cell C Sharks marshalled the Springbok backline in 2016, in what was also the side’s worst season to date with just four wins from their 12 Tests.

The return of Bulls pivot, Handré Pollard, from injury will make earning the number 10 jersey this season much tougher.

While Jantjies welcomes the competition, he says first and foremost he is a team player and puts that above personal accolades.

"I am not an individual type of guy. I have said this since I started playing senior rugby. It is all about making sure I do what the team expects of me. It is also about a willingness to develop younger players and a willingness to listen to others. It is about taking responsibility and developing my leadership abilities as well," Jantjies said.

The Lions kickoff their Super Rugby campaign next week Saturday when they travel to Bloemfontein to face the Toyota Cheetahs.

The Sharks have a Super Rugby date with the Reds in Brisbane next week Friday - 24 February.
