Higgo showing the heat with second win in three weeks

South Africa’s brightest young golfing star Garrick Higgo proved that he is meant for the big stage when he stormed to a six shot win at the Canary Islands Championship on the European Tour this weekend; a second win in three weeks on tour.

The 21-year-old claimed his third win on the European Tour when he won the Gran Caneria Open just fourteen days prior to his demolition of the Golf Costa Adeje when he finished with an overall 27 under par 257.

Amongst the records that Higgo has set, his win over the weekend saw him become the third-youngest player to win three times on the European Tour and he is the fastest South African to three professional wins – excluding majors and WGC events.

The big achievement for the man from Paul Roos Gymnasium was that he tied Tiger Woods for the fewest number of events to claim three wins on the European/PGA Tour. This past week’s outing in Tenerife was just Higgo’s 26th event.

Higgo’s achievement wasn’t lost on himself when he looked back on his performance that was unrivalled.

"I was trying to shoot 30 under," Higgo said to AFP.

"It's unreal, I played so well today. I hit the ball very nicely, so it was a lot less stressful than the last time because I was hitting it a lot better. I can't believe it happened so quickly again but my game has been good so I can believe it as well."

"I think I can go as high as I want to, the way I'm playing I can do a lot of good things.

"I've been working really hard, a lot of little things, and I've also accepted what works for me and stuck with that, I think that's been a big thing, and not if I don't play as well look for something. I'm just going to try and keep going."

The result for Higgo takes him to a career-high 51st on the latest World Golf Ranking and he has qualified for the PGA Championship at Kiawah Island Golf Resort Ocean Course starting on 20 May.

South African golf is in a strong position at the moment as they now boast ten players in the top 100 players in the world and after the United States and the United Kingdom, South Africa has the most players in the top 100.
