Good shad action at Cape Vidal

We have received news of good shad fishing at Cape Vidal over the past week.

Kosi Bay has seen a bit of a quiet run with the inedibles over the last week, allowing anglers to spend their time concentrating on edible species such as stumpies and wave garrick. These fish were targeted on small chokka baits on light tackle and were caught in the shallows off most sandbanks. The stumpies preferred a sardine head bait. Most anglers fishing in the lakes managed a few decent kingies on fly and drop-shot as well, including some good sized grunter and rock salmon on bait.  As the water starts to heat up we will start to notice a big difference in the feeding patterns and the number of fish being landed. So keep a few days of your summer open for a trip up to Kosi Bay.

The Cape Vidal report this week suggest high numbers of shad in the area, which have been making good size and are also proving to be working very well as bait for larger flatfish such as diamond rays, honeycombs and also a few blackfin sharks. Live shad slid out has also produced the odd garrick which have been present recently. Artificials have also been fairly productive in these areas too.

There have been good catches of kob and garrick around Richards Bay, as well as a number of flatfish of all sorts. The bay has seen many a grunter for anglers fishing from boats and from the side, most of which have been much larger than previous weeks. Going with what we have seen thus far, our summer should be hugely productive. The kingfish and springer are well on their way through and should make an appearance in the harbour shortly.

Zinkwazi/Blythedale has had grey sharks targeted in the evenings by anglers using spinning outfits and medium sized throw baits. Quite a few fish have been caught, mostly coming out in twos and threes and making good size. Shad and garrick have been caught in the mornings along this stretch.

Anglers in the Ballito area have been catching smaller shad and the odd decent size fish.  There are plenty of peckers around and so most baits do not last too long.

Sheffield has had good looking water, but very few fish being landed.

Tongaat river mouth saw some excellent bronze bream and brusher action over the weekend in the bad weather.
