Gold finds positives in Sharks loss

Cell C Sharks coach Gary Gold believes his side is improving week by week, despite their 31-16 loss to the Lions on Saturday night.

The Gauteng outfit beat the Sharks in Durban for the first time since 2007. They scored four tries, securing a bonus point which saw them cruise to the top of the Absa Currie Cup log after round three.

At 16-10 up in the second half, the Sharks were shell-shocked by three quick tries which eventually gave the Lions victory. While that suggests a poor defensive effort, Gold was quick to back the improvements his young side had made in that department.

“I think we defended them very well. With the exception of one or two errors we made, they didn’t cut us at will like they’ve done to a couple of the other teams the weeks before,” Gold said.

“I’m really happy with our defensive structures but more importantly the energy that the guys brought from a defensive point of view. I thought they were really up for it today and that’s all we can ask for.”

“When we’ve got a handful of young guys playing their first Currie Cup we’re going to make mistakes. You don’t want to go beat them with a stick and tell them to go and play an exciting brand of rugby – then when they make a mistake stop them from doing it.”

“It’s if you don’t bring the energy and I don’t think we brought it last week against the Kings but I thought we did today,” Gold said.

The Sharks now sit 6th on the Currie Cup log, having lost two of their three matches. Next up is a trip to Port Elizabeth for their second meeting with the EP Kings in the space of three weeks.
