The team will compete in 17 sports including sevens rugby, athletics, bowls, shooting and swimming - all of which are expected to produce medals.

The team won 33 medals in India in 2010 and are expected to exceed this amount in Scotland.

Both Andre Olivier and Johan Cronje had confidence-boosting performances in the Diamond League held in Hamden Stadium in Glasgow on Friday as part of the pre-Commonwealth events.

Olivier ran a well judged race to finish second to the 800m world record holder, David Rudisha, who crossed the line in1:34.34.  Although over two seconds, adrift Olivier was able to hold off Britain's Michael Rimmer by 0.24 seconds.

Cronje was the other South African in action in Glasgow. The World Championship 1500m bronze medalist finished fourth in the metric mile behind Kenyan, Silas Kiplagat, who took the honours in 3:32.84. Moroccan, Adbalaati Iguider, was second in 3:33.20, with American Leonel Manzano third in 3:34.40.

Joseph Munywoki continues to impress on the local road racing scene, this time winning the Savages Supa Mama half-marathon challenge on Durban’s beachfront in one hour five minutes and 17 seconds. The Phantane athlete left Zimbabwean, Elmore Sibanda in his wake by 16 seconds.

Phatane’s Sithulisiwe Zhou made it a double, opening 200m on Jenna Challenor to cross the line in 1:16:01 in the ladies race. Challenor, who is making her comeback from injury, was pleased with the outing and is now preparing for her run as an ambassador in the Mandela Day Marathon on 31 August.

Durban’s Olympic marathoner, Tanith Maxwell, was third across the line in 1:18:39 and had the consolation of winning the 35-39 age category.
