Then the annual Meerensee Boat Club 21 Species Fishing Festival is for you!

The Meerensee Boat Club in Richards Bay was established on the 14 November 1981 with a modest four boats and now boasts 439 boat members and 50 social members.

The very first 21 Species Fishing Festival was organized by Kokkie Jacobs in June 1992. Over the years the festival has grown considerably and this year fishermen will not only be celebrating the festival’s  21st birthday, but also another milestone. Retha Kriek will be elected as the first female commodore of a boat fishing club in the country.

This year the festival will take place over the weekend of 5-7 July at the Meerensee Boat Club.

Media relations officer at the club, Cylvia Broodryk says, “being one of the North Coast’s most popular fishing events, we would like to encourage all anglers young and old to take part in our festival even if only you attend as an spectator. There will be live entertainment throughout the weekend as well as stalls and other exciting things on the go!”

The grand prize is a whopping R80 000 and there are 20 other prizes up for grabs to a value of R10 000, including a R5 000 cash prize. The junior winner will walk away with R3 000 in cash.

Got a little fisherman? No problem – There will be a kiddies fishing festival off the banks of the Meerensee Boat Club on the 6 July from 9am to 3pm and on the 7 July from 9am to 1pm at a R20 fee per angler. This is for kids between the ages of nought and 12 years of age.

For those a little older – the fees are as follows: R400 per male angler, R300 for female anglers, R200 for juniors (up to the age of 16 years). The briefing will be on the 5 July 2013 at 17h30 for 18h00.
