Since June 2015 then there have been 14 monthly boxing tournaments under the theme Boxing is Back which were televised on the TKO programme on SABC 2 on Friday evenings putting boxing back on a firm path towards growth. The consistent televised Boxing Is Back tournaments represent over 500 rounds of televised boxing showcasing over 190 boxers.
Boxing is back on television through The TKO programme on SABC 2. Boxing is also back on a consistent and firm path of growth through the monthly Boxing Is Back tournaments. So on the same wavelength of bringing boxing back, it is time to bring back a structured programme to recognize and reward outstanding excellence in the sport through the South African Boxing Awards 2017. This after an 8-year long absence of the awards which were last held in 2009 at Carnival City in Gauteng.
The evening is set to be a memorable and captivating affair and the creative concept will stand on the three pillars - The Podium, The Ring; and The Ramp. The actual awards ceremony will represent the notion of The Podium. The boxers and other nominees will also model some fashion from Durban designers, hence the notion of The Ramp. The Ring will belong to; among others, popular actors Vuyo Dabula who plays Gadaffi or Kumkani on SABC 1’s soapy Generations: The Legacy and Gabriel Temudzani who plays Azwindini Mukwevho or Vafhuwi on the popular SABC 2 soapy Muvhango. The two will battle it out in an exhibition bout. Vuyo Dabula wanting to continue the merciless gangster persona he portrays on Generations: The Legacy while Gabriel Temudzani says he was a multiple Musangwe champion back in his village. Musangwe is a traditional Venda bare knuckle boxing.
