Durban copper steenbras action
Updated | By Andre Bloem and Kingfisher
We have been told of very good bottom fishing off Durban over the past week.
North
An extremely slow week of ski-boat fishing has passed, as many anglers have been made aware that we are in the windy season and time on the water is going to be rather limited. For those who will be braving the windy conditions, be sure to set estimated arrival times with your family and friends as a safety measure. If you come home to your wife late, make sure you have fish to avoid getting in trouble. Sodwana has been the top spot for two weeks running now, with good catches of couta, Natal snoek and wahoo. Charter boats have done particularly well with their local knowledge, putting clients on fish almost daily. There have also been various reports from the north coast region which indicate that there are a few large yellowfin tuna around, which have been taking poppers and live bait mostly. For those looking for extra power when fighting these monster fish, take a look at the new Daiwa Saltiga range of spinning reels. These reels have been engineered to handle any fishing the ocean can throw at them and with advancements in the design, have been made even stronger and smoother than before. Due to the high seas experienced over the last week, not much fishing was done from the boats and skis. However, there was a fair amount of fish caught between Zinkwazi and Durban. The majority of the fish were smaller snoek and garrick, both caught at most river mouths. Bottom fishing in the same stretches in the deep also produced some excellent success with catches including copper steenbras, daga salmon, geelbek and musselcracker. In the deeper waters, good catches of trawl soldiers were seen. The current has been erratic, screaming at 7km one day and dead the next day. Fishing shallower would be a safer bet.
Local
Durban has seen good bottom fishing as well, with many boats landing good copper steenbras and musselcracker. The daga have been exceptional this year and the Barge saw a fine specimen of 46kg speared. Further south, the Cutting saw a few good daga too, many of which were taken from paddle-skis.
South
This part of the KZN coast saw good numbers of yellowtail, musselcracker, copper steenbras and general reds landed. A few good sized wahoo were also caught down the coast, as well as the odd good sized specimen being speared.
