Dawn Dunn: Lesson in humility

Dawn Dunn: Lesson in humility

I was quite distressed and disappointed with the press release from Jake regarding his future coaching aspirations with regards to the Wallabies.

We all know that his tenure with the boys will be short term, however I think that the statement made was in very poor taste and should have waited until the end of Super Rugby or at least at the end of the match. His focus, should have been on the boys and the difficult match that they were going to face. In the end, a lesson in humility was dished up.

I warned the boys in my article last week that they were starting to rely on Steyn far too much and they needed to start scoring tries. In very difficult conditions in Canberra, the boys struggled to put any attacking play together. Kicking dominated from both sides. For some reason, our Steyn really struggled with kicks that he has nailed before. Quite frankly, he is not to blame for the loss. We had opportunities and did not manage to capitalise on them. We had a great effort from Deysel, Mvovo, Alberts and Cobusie. There are some players that only gave the team 50% and that is just not on. I am very concerned that the Brumbies dominated us in an area that they are weak in – the scrums! We committed far too many handling errors once again. I just think that we are losing our way a little bit. We are not scoring tries, not even in good conditions. The 1 really great thing is that the boys managed a bonus point in spite of the loss and therefore remain top of the log.

The boys need to take a good hard look at themselves. We are on the verge of achieving something really special. The boys now need to decide if they REALLY want it, because the only obstacle to the team is their own lack of self-belief. The Sharks have the best of everything including loyal fans who love them. They need to now dig deep and continue on this incredible journey, from Good to Great.
