Champions League & Europa League Last Eight draw done

Given the recent worldwide coronavirus lockdown, the footballing world will be licking their lips at the line-up for the upcoming Champions League last eight as it was drawn on Friday along with the last eight for the Europa League.

Champions League Trophy

With the logistical hassle of hosting a knock-out competition in the current climate, UEFA have decided that the Champions League play-off’s will be a straight knock-out competition in Lisbon over the month of August.

There are still a handful of last 16 fixtures that need to be completed with Chelsea and Bayern Munich, Napoli and Barcelona, Real Madrid and Manchester City and Lyon and Juventus still to finalise who moves to the next round.

City go into the second leg with 2-1 aggregate, Lyon are leading Juventus 1-nil, Barcelona and Napoli are deadlocked at 1-all and Bayern are cruising against Chelsea 3-nil.

At the moment only Atalanta, Atletico Madrid, Red Bull Leipzig and PSG have qualified for the final eight of Europe’s premier domestic competition.

Friday’s draw has served up some potential humdingers with Real Madrid or Man City playing Lyon or Juventus, a potential Barcelona against Bayen Munich clash while the other confirmed games see Atalanta face PSG and Leipzig take on Atletico.

The Europa League last eight draw was not as straight forward with none of the last sixteen legs completed.

Ultimately for Man United fans they could see their side-line up against either İstanbul Başakşehir of Turkey or Copenhagen from Denmark.

Wolves are the only other English side in the hunt for Europa League honours and they will have arguably the hardest task should they beat Olympiacos in the second leg of their tie.

The winner of that tie will face Sevilla or Roma which will be played over one leg.

As with the Champions League the quarter-finals, semi-finals and final of the Europa League will all take place in one venue. Cologne in Germany has been designated as the venue for the play-offs starting on 5 August with the final on 21 August.
