Carp biting at several KZN dams

Carp biting at several KZN dams

We have been told of good carp fishing at a number of dams over the past week.

Carp - Numerous reports have come through regarding the high number of carp being landed at Shongweni, Nagle and Albert Falls dams. Most fish are fattening up for the winter period and can be seen being extremely active in the shallows and in the deeper water on most scum lines. Most of these fish are on the search for larger food sorts and will not hesitate to feed on any larger baits put out. These fish will be moving fast to cover more ground in a day and so baits with stronger flavours are preferred. Korda Goo has proven extremely effective in these months. Any strong flavors such as FX, Caramel, Garlic or Aniseed will get a good take. Albert Falls seems to be getting the lion's share of catches, which have been taken from Pelican Bay and Slipway 4. Aniseed sweet corn has been the most popular for these fish. Inanda saw a good fish of 16kg landed on specimen tackle close to the river section. Anglers traveling on boat to their spots are hugely advantaged and have the opportunity to target unfished areas. Nagle has seen a few good fish up to around 10kg in the shallows close to the wall.

Bass - Another week of good sized bass at both Inanda and Shongweni. One of our provincial team anglers boating fish of 3.8kg, 3.4kg, 3.2kg and a few just smaller too, all in one day's fishing. These fish are feeding extremely well and have been taking Flukes, Senkos and also top water lures earlier in the mornings. Albert Falls had anglers pulling their hair out over the weekend, with hundreds of smaller fish being landed. The odd fish between 1kg-2kg was seen at Tim’s Trees, so midday fishing with a crank bait should work. Children fishing in the shallows around Pelican Bay have used light line to catch dozens of smaller fish on chartreuse finesse worms and Fat Albert grubs. Light line such as Daiwa Sensor 6lb will be more suitable for this light application angling, in order to get more bites and give the lures a more natural presentation.
