Carp action at Shongweni Dam

Shongweni Dam has been a happy hunting ground for carp fishermen over the past week.

Carp - Albert Falls saw very few carp anglers due to the amount of bass anglers on the water. Shongweni saw some good angling for a number of anglers who braved the bad weather. Some bigger fish were landed along with a number of smaller fish. Hazelmere produced a good number of scalies and smaller carp around the river mouth area on small baits such as maize and pop-ups. Midmar was bitterly cold with the cold front and no reports of better size fish were seen. Smaller fish were landed in dribs and drabs.

Bass - Albert Falls Bass Classic took place on the weekend and despite the weather not playing its part, anglers still sat it out and enjoyed some lovely bass angling. The heaviest fish landed was 4.24kg and caught by Jacque Snyman. A close second place went to Selvan Gounden with a fish of 4,2kg. In the ladies division, Michelle Wakeford landed a respectable fish of 1.47kg. The top junior prize went to Jaidon Snyman at 2.28kg. Well done to all who participated and to all of the winners.

Fly - Fly fishermen had a bitterly cold weekend away as most of the dams in the colder areas saw snow. Fishing had been excellent in the beginning of the week at Crystal Waters. Some dams are fishing well with egg patterns, but the majority of the dams have fished well with big Papa Roach patterns and Mrs. Simpson's fished deep and slow.
