Boxing boss explains Durban choice

Boxing South Africa CEO, Tsholo Lejaka, has explained why they chose Durban to host the SA Boxing Awards ceremony this week. "Durban is the city of sport tourism. Durban will host the Commonwealth Games in 2022. Durban has the facilities, the vibe and the atmosphere. The city also has passionate people. For us it was a natural choice. Durban ticks all the boxes," said Lejaka.

Lejaka is also satisfied with the current state of boxing in South Africa.

"In 2013 the Minister of Sport convened what was called the boxing indaba and the boxing community itself agreed on a minimum programme of action. In other words the things that were needed to revitalise and reposition boxing. We are quite happy and believe we are on track," Lejaka concluded.

Durban International Convention Centre will host the SA Boxing Awards on 27 January 2017.

The event will be graced by an exhibition bout between Vuyo “Kumkani Gaddaffi” Dabula and Gabriel “Azwindini Vafhuwi” Temudzani.

Since June 2015 then there have been 14 monthly boxing tournaments under the theme Boxing is Back which were televised on the TKO programme on SABC 2 on Friday evenings putting boxing back on a firm path towards growth. The consistent televised Boxing Is Back tournaments represent over 500 rounds of televised boxing showcasing over 190 boxers.

Boxing is back on television through The TKO programme on SABC 2. Boxing is also back on a consistent and firm path of growth through the monthly Boxing Is Back tournaments. So on the same wavelength of bringing boxing back, it is time to bring back a structured programme to recognize and reward outstanding excellence in the sport through the South African Boxing Awards 2017. This after an 8-year long absence of the awards which were last held in 2009 at Carnival City in Gauteng.
