Bosch primed for the Currie Cup final

In a twelve month period that has represented everything but normal, the Cell C Sharks will look to the influential Curwin Bosch to bring a sense of normalcy to proceedings when they travel to Loftus for the Carling Currie Cup final against the Bulls this weekend.

Following their bruising semi-final win over Western Province last week the Sharks would have been concerned about injuries but they have registered a clean bill of health from both an injuries perspective, but more importantly from a covid-19 perspective.

Finals rugby does tend to dish up matches that one wouldn’t initially predict and despite the fact that the Bulls are going into the match as the favourites, Bosch knows that the Sharks are capable of winning.

“It’s a finals week, anything can happen,” Bosch said. “The margin for error is going to be a little bit smaller and there’s going to be a little less space.

"Along with the pressure of it being a final it is going to be a nice challenge for the team.”

Bosch played fullback in the Sharks side that beat Western Province in the Currie Cup final in 2018. Being able to be amongst those players that have won a Currie Cup is a privilege and he would like to move into that bracket of players who have won more than one.

"It’s special winning the Currie Cup; sometimes it’s hard to put into words because it is the oldest and most prestigious competition we have in South Africa.

“I think the boys know what’s at stake and there are a lot of young guys that would love to win a Currie Cup.

“You look at legends of the game like Jean de Villiers and Schalk Burger who played over 100 games for Western Province and never won a Currie Cup.

“The boys know how special it is but we are going to go out there and as Sbu (Nkosi) said ‘we are going to play the game and not the occasion’.”

The Sharks pivot has been in fine form off the tee and was instrumental in their semi-final win at Newlands last week. He feels that he’s managed to refine his kicking preparation and that’s starting to pay off.

“The one thing that I have changed is less repetition and more quality in what I do,” he explained. “I don’t go and kick 100 balls, when I do go and kick I make sure that they are quality kicks all the time.”

The battle of the boot is going to be spoken about intently going into this weekend’s clash and it’s a showdown that Bosch is looking forward to.

“Kicking has been a massive part of our game plan for a period of time now and nothing changes in a final, it’s just another game of rugby that we need to play.

“We are just going to have to be more accurate and make sure that we take our opportunities when they present themselves,” he added.

The Sharks will announce their side for the clash on Thursday.

Kick-off at Loftus Versveld is at 2pm on Saturday.
