The Springbok captain made his return from injury in their 34-32 loss to Japan last weekend. It wasn't the skipper's best outing and the public outcry after the match had many believing that De Villiers would be dropped for their crunch clash against Samoa.

It wasn't to be and De Villiers partners with Damian de Allende in the midfield. The 34-year-old captain said he was grateful that coach Heyneke Meyer had continued faith in him.

"Yes I did [think he would be dropped] and I am also very aware of the criticism that he's [Meyer] gone under for selecting me. But at the end of the day he thought it best to do that and I am very grateful for the opportunity that I get again to play," De Villiers said.

"At the end of the day I really want South Africa to do well, I want the team to be successful and win and whether I am part of that or not, I still want that. Whether it's in the starting team, bench or in the stands, I am willing to give everything to get that.

"The responsibility I have this week is to perform on the field and I've been given this opportunity again by the coach and now is the time to put up my hand and deliver a performance that is good enough to warrant that selection."

While he needs to stamp his authority on the game, De Villiers highlighted the need for his side to remain disciplined against Samoa. Their previous World Cup clashes against the Pacific Islanders have been riddled with off-the-ball incidents.

"I think discipline will be very important. I don't expect and I really hope that there isn't any off-the-ball stuff. They are a very proud rugby nation and so are we and we really just want to play the game," De Villiers said.

"We like to play the game and we want to play cleanly and within the rules - you play it hard and it will be hard that I guarantee you. It will be very physical but hopefully we can stay within the limits of the game and make it a good spectacle for the people watching," the captain said.

The Boks face Samoa at 17h45. Today's other clashes see Italy face Canada at 15h30, while tournament hosts England face Wales at 20h30 tonight.
