The veteran half back has linked up with the Blues after the Japanese Top League season was abandoned due to the ongoing Coronavirus pandemic. Carter has been plying his trade in Japan since 2018 and the Kobelco Steelers were up to second on the Top League table before the season was called off.

In a move that will no doubt cause plenty of heartbreak for Canterbury and Crusaders fans, Carter’s move to the Blues gives the Auckland outfit some serious firepower considering that they signed All Blacks flyhalf Beauden Barrett towards the end of the 2019 season.

Carter is considered to be one of the greatest flyhalfs to have played the game. He amassed 112 Test caps for New Zealand before retiring from international rugby after the All Blacks won the 2015 Rugby World Cup.

He featured in 141 Super Rugby matches for the Crusaders and won the competition three times with the Canterbury-based outfit. He’s won the French Top 14 twice, with Perpignan and Racing 92. He also helped the Kobelco Steelers to glory in the Japanese Top League in 2018.

Carter is even more decorated on the Test front. He’s a two time World Cup winner, a nine time Rugby Championship/Tri Nations winner and has a British and Irish Lions tour victory under his belt.

The Super Rugby Aoteroa competition kicks off on 13 June. The Highlanders will meet the Chiefs and the Blues will take on the Hurricanes.
